The main research interests of our Department are: I. Typological comparison of the data which have been collected in other Eastern languages and on the basis of such comparison, definition of generalized statements and universals; II. Making up assumptions and theoritacal, deductive universals that are then analysed and inspected in other Departments on the basis of the concrete languages. The research spheres are quite different: Phonetic-Phonologic (transla- tion and interpretation of Avicena's, Sibavaihi's phonetic treatises; analysis of Chinese affricats; definition of the degree of voicefulness for voiced consonants in different languages, phonological analysis of the Armenian phonemes); Morphology (the analysis of Turkish morphemes; morphological elements of negation); Syntax (Syntactic peculiarities of the Kartvelian languages; the main models of the simple sentence, the syntactic homonyms); Semantic (analysis of the relation terms; universal signs of the color terms); Lexicology (Eastern loan-words in Georgian; Neologisms in Iranian); Comparative Kartvelology (comparative analysis of flora and fauna lexems; comparison of the Indoevropean and the Kartve- lian root structures; phonological universals of the root); Speech (the role of the stress in speech, analysis of yes/no dialogue structures). The members of our Department are teaching and have lecture courses in the Tbilisi State University and other Institutes. They organize diffe- rent seminars, schools and conferences. There are some PhD students at our Department too. Next year our Department will participate in the International (Czechia, Poland, Georgia) Project "Semantics and Typology of yes/no particles", sponsored by RSS (Research Support Scheme).
