Terminology and Conceptual Database.
Since 1984, the Electrotechnical Chair of the POLITEHNICA University
of Bucharest has been the first partner of the Thesaurus Working Group of the
Romanian National Committee for the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The second partner of the Thesaurus Working Group is the Research Institute for
Electrical Engineering (ICPE) from Bucharest. The Thesaurus Working Group is
dealing with the elaboration of the IEC standardized terminology multilingual concept
thesaurus, having as source the IEC publications: vocabularies, standards,
recommendations, reports, specifications etc. First of all, the elaboration of the IEC
Thesaurus follows the third edition of the domain-oriented chapters of the International
Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEC symbol 50(***)) edited about 20 years ago by the IEC
- and not completely issued yet - in the field of Electricity, Electronics,
Telecommunication and Information Technology. The first anticipated French edition of
the IEC Thesaurus was issued in Geneva, in 1986.
In 1989 a second English-French version of the IEC Thesaurus was ready for
publication. Since 1990, the IEC Thesaurus has been entirely transformed, as a
conceptual relational database could be presented in many languages. At the end of
1995, the IEC Thesaurus contained over 30 000 concepts, more than 110 000 binary
relations between concepts (language-free files), and about 33 000 terms (descriptors,
synonyms, non-recommended synonyms, abbreviations etc.) in any of the already
implemented languages: English, French and Romanian. An original software for the
exploitation and update of the database is available.
In February 1997 the Thesaurus Working Group published a dictionary of standardized
electrotechnical terminology. Here are its coordinates:
National Romanian Committee for International Electrotechnical Commission (NRC-
IEC), University "Politehnica" of Bucharest (UPB), Research Institute for Electrical
Engineering (ICPE) - English-Romanian & Romanian-English Dictionary of
Standardized Electrotechnical Terminology - Technical Publishing House, Bucharest,
1996.
The Thesaurus Working Group has been working in the frame of an INCO-
COPERNICUS international joint project called LANGELEC, the other partners being
linguists from France, Germany, Poland and Russia.
