Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University is a young one, now it
s in its second year.
t offers all the main subjects within the field of computer science and
lso the applications in other fields like law, economics, natural
anguage processing, virtual reality and others. That's why one of its
argest departments is called Dept.of Information Technologies.
he programme of the Faculty for graduates offers 3 years for Bachelor
egree and also 5 years for MA Degree. Postgraduate programme usually
akes 3 years for PhD Degree (or its Czech equivalent).
e participate in some large projects supported by Czech Grant Agency, as
o NLP - it is "Czech in the Age of Computers", we have applied for
articipation in INCO Copernicus - project Information System Interface
or Handicapped People together with the Erlangen and Jena University,
jubljana University, Durham University, West Bohemia University.
n March 1998 we going to start participation within EuroWordNet-2
roject coordinated by Piek Vossen from Amsterdam University.
e cooperate closely with the Institute of Czech National Corpus (tagging,
uilding corpus of spoken Czech, corpus tools) at Charles University in
rague and also with the group of Prof.P.Sgall (Institute of Theoretical
nd Computational Linguistics) and Prof.E.Hajicova (Institute of Formal
nd Applied Linguistics), both at Charles University. Our other interests
re within the field of (Czech) syntax and also logical semantics,
articularly intensional logic and its application to
he analysis of natural language (together with Prof.Pavel Materna).
There is a Unix based network at the Faculty connected to Internet, all
ain programming languages are used, TeX and LaTeX tools are supported
ithin the network. Main hardware are Sun Sparck workstations and also
ilicon Graphics workstations (mostly Indy and O2).
