The SpeechLab at the Technical University of Liberec was established in 1993, following up a longer tradition of research activities in the speech processing area at this institute. The group is led by Jan Nouza, who has been involved in the speech research for 15 years. Our main interest has been focused on speech recognition with applications towards real-time recognition systems, dialogue systems, information over telephone, aids for the handicaped and tools supporting education. In 1994 we completed the first Czech prototype of a discrete-utterance speaker-independent recognition system based on the fast implementation of the CDHMM technique on a PC. In 1995 an improved version of the system was used in the design of the first voice dialogue system operating in Czech. The system provided a basic information about coach departures in the city of Liberec. In 1996 we developed a prototype of a visual-feedback system applicable as an aid for deaf people in training their speech abilities. At the Eurospeech97 conference we presented a unique system for visualizing speech data and speech recognition algorithms. The system named VISPER includes modules like 'Signal Profiler', 'DTW Explorer' and 'Visual Markov' that make teaching and learning speech recognition techniques quite easy. Recently we have been developing a telephone-operated speech dialogue system providing public information about sport and cultural events in our city.
