Department of Circuit Theory, SpeechProcessing Group
Czech Technical University in Prague,Faculty of Electrical Engineering

Type of Organisation: public
Number of Employees: 10-50
Activities developed: Education.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering student body consists of approximately 4000 full-time students, 300 part-time students and 300 post graduate students. The speech processing group was established at the Department of Circuit Theory in 1981. The group has about 10 researchers, 9 PhD students and about 10 graduates. The department plays a significant role in speech technology research in Czech Republic. It is in contact with other research institutions and universities. From the very beginning the research took place in the speech synthesis and analysis. The wave shape coding algorithms were a vital topic and the result of this research found application in several synthesisers with a limited vocabulary and high quality of speech. The actual research activity is focused on speech recognition. The recognition procedures are based mainly on hidden Markov models. The isolated digits speaker independent recogniser implemented in one chip was worked out. Currently the group dialling system).

Infrastructure Hardware, operating systems, and networking: HP PA-RISC workstation 715/50, 64MB RAM, running HPUX 9.01 integrated sound i/o with sampling freq. up to 48kHz, Sun 4/80 (SPARCstation 10), 64M RAM, running Solaris 2.3 (SunOS 5.3, OpenWindows ), Access to IBM 3290 running VMS, PCs 486, 386 running MS DOS 6.x + MS Windows, MS Windows NT 3.1, SCO System V UNIX, intended installation of LINUX. PhD studies and exchange The faculty enables to the outstanding students to advance their academic standard in a wider perspective and to develop research ability in theory and application in 15 scientific and engineering programs leading toward the PhD degree. Study time of PhD studies is usually 3 years.

Exchange programs are not very developed. Some of postgraduates and postdocs took place in scholarship programs. The scholarships were sponsored by Hewlett Packard, France Telecom (ENST), by Tempus program and Swiss national Foundation (EPFL Laussane), etc. Students from outside the Czech Republic are offered courses conducted in the English Language, supported by textbooks written in English. All assignments and exams must also be accomplished in English. As an option, an international student can take a 1-year preparation course in the Czech language (accompanied with some refreshment courses in selected subjects) that would enable him to attend the regular courses conducted for the Czech students.
