Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University

Type of Organisation: public
Number of Employees: 10-50
Activities developed: Research, Education.

The Institute was established in 1990 after the political changes as a continuation of the research work and teaching carried out by the former Laboratory of Algebraic Linguistics since the early 60s at the Faculty of Arts and later at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics.

We provide introductory as well as advanced computational linguistics courses for undergraduates, supervise students in completing their master theses and we train postgraduate students working on their PhD theses.

Together with the 'sister' Institute of theoretical and computational linguistics (Faculty of Philosophy) we aim at the development of teaching programmes and research in the domain of theoretical and computational linguistics at the respective Faculties, collaborating closely with other departments such as the Institute of the Czech National Corpus at the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics.

Apart from many Czech institutes working in the field of computational linguistics, we closely cooperate with many european and north-american institutions; to name a few: ISSCO, Geneva, Switzerland; University of Saarbrücken, Germany; CNUCE-CNR, Pisa, Italy; University of Hamburg, Germany; University of Stuttgart, Germany; CNRS, Paris, France; Xerox Research, Grenoble, France; CLSP Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, USA; University of Massachusetts, MA, USA; IBM Research, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA.

We are involved in a number of national and internationsal research projects. One main area is corpus building; we are involved in the Prague Dependency Treebank project and in the develpment of a machine-readable corpus of Czech texts.

Another main area is natural language processing. Some current and recent international projects we have been involved in: generation of instruction text (project AGILE), topic-focus and semantics of quantifiers, grammatical analysis of Slavonic languages (project LATESLAV), terminology extraction (project STEEL), Dictionary Standardization and Application Development, TELRI.
