Department of Language modelling Institute of Control Systems of Georgian Academy of Sciences General Info

Type of Organisation: public
Number of Employees: less than 10
Activities developed: Research, Software.

As the main achievements during more than 40 years of NLP researches in the Department can be considered creation and implementation of : experimental system of Russian-Georgian translation; some linguistic processors for speech dialogue systems; linguistic component of a speaker identification and verification system; algorithmic descriptions of the Georgian, Russian and English grammars and a special algorithmic language for the record of such descriptions. Contrary to this, our educational activity was restricted to some courses on Machine Translation delivered at the Tbilisi State University (Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics); and tutorials in course of graduation theses preparing by the students of the same speciality. The computational basis of these activities includes four Pentiums, ScanJet 4C, LaserJet hp and two ordinary printers (EPSON LQ-100 and Brother hl). The main programming language is "C", operating system - Windows. Particularly, the special algorithmic language, by means of which most of the systems of the last decade are recorded, is oriented on "C" programming language. Recently the focus of our interests in this aspect shifted towards net representation of grammar and its implementation by the means of the same "C"-language. The method is tested for the time being on the systems processing in both directions (synthesis/analysis) Georgian and Russian nouns and full range of English word forms, furthermore, the net representation was used for implementation of some part (reflexive verbs) of Russian morphologic tagger without dictionary and now is being used for elaboration of automated Russian spelling dictionary, generating full paradigm corresponding to input basic form. Institute of Control Systems, where our Department is affiliated, supports the current Project: Software for Georgian text processing (2001-2003). UNESCO has twice (1995 and 1997) allotted grants ($10.000 and $11.000) for Project: Automatized Translation into Georgian Language. The Department was participating during 1997-1998 years in the common Swedish-Georgian Project (together with Department of Speech, Music & Hearing of KTH) supported twice by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences: Russian-Language word predictor for writing support. This Swedish-Georgian collaboration continues currently: one of Dep. Members is now working on probation at KTH and developing of the above mentioned spelling dictionary also gets financial support from Sweden. The department is one of the most active members of the local Centre on Language, Logic, Speech, particularly contributing to organization of series of bi-annual international Symposia and Summer Schools already conducted by the Centre or planned for the near future.
